Overview
Electrical stimulation (EMS), including common settings like Pre-Mod, High Volt, and Interferential Current (IFC), is a therapy that uses gentle electrical pulses to stimulate muscle activity and support healing. After a car accident, muscles may become tense, inflamed, or inactive due to pain or injury. EMS helps restore normal function by improving circulation, reducing spasms, and encouraging the body’s natural healing response.
At Accident Care Clinic, EMS is often used early in the recovery process to prepare the body for hands-on therapy or exercise. It’s painless, effective, and easily combined with other treatments like soft tissue therapy, stretching, or chiropractic care.
Common Signs EMS May Help You
You have muscle tightness or spasms that don’t ease on their own
You’re experiencing soreness, swelling, or tension after your accident
Certain muscles feel weak, underused, or fatigued
You’re sensitive to touch or movement in specific muscle groups
Your provider recommends EMS to prepare your body for other therapies
What to Expect During Treatment
EMS is non-invasive and generally very comfortable. Your provider will place small adhesive pads over the targeted area, and the EMS machine will deliver a series of mild pulses. You may feel a gentle tingling or light tapping sensation — never sharp or painful.
Sessions typically last 10–20 minutes and may be followed by stretching, adjustments, or manual therapy depending on your care plan.
Benefits of EMS Therapy
Reduces muscle spasms and soft tissue tension
Improves circulation in sore or inflamed areas
Helps reactive or weak muscles regain function
Prepares the body for other physical therapies
Speeds up recovery when used as part of a full treatment plan
Tailored EMS Treatment for Muscle Recovery
Not all injuries respond the same — and not all patients tolerate stimulation the same way. That’s why we personalize EMS based on your injury location, pain level, and stage of healing. Our goal is to make the therapy feel supportive and effective without ever pushing your body too far.

Electrical Stimulation - Frequently Asked Questions
What does EMS feel like?
Most patients describe it as a light tingling, tapping, or pulsing sensation. It’s not painful — and the intensity can be adjusted to keep you comfortable.
Is EMS the same as TENS?
Not exactly. TENS is used mostly for pain relief, while EMS is focused on stimulating muscle function. They use similar equipment but have different goals.
When is EMS used in my treatment plan?
Usually early on — especially if your muscles are tense, inflamed, or not ready for hands-on care. It may also be used to support recovery between sessions.
How long does EMS take to work?
Some patients feel relief immediately after their session. Others may need a few visits to notice full effects. It depends on your condition and how your body responds.
What are Pre-Mod, High Volt, and IFC?
These are different EMS settings used to target specific treatment goals. Pre-Mod is often used for pain relief over smaller areas, High Volt delivers deeper stimulation for inflammation or swelling, and IFC is great for larger muscle groups or deeper pain. Your provider will select the best option based on your symptoms and treatment plan.
